Early Pregnancy Signs

Very few women can realize they are pregnant a few days after conception. During my first pregnancy, I didn’t find out until I was approximately 8-9 weeks pregnant, which was confirmed in mid August 2013 by a visit to an ob/gyn. However, in my current 2nd pregnancy, I know before I missed my period and was able to confirm it just a few days before my period was to come. Some mild signs of pregnancy are tender breasts, sickness and fatigue. The most obvious sign of pregnancy, is a missed period.

Here is a list of early pregnancy signs and symptoms:

1. Monthly period stops

One of the first changes happens, is you will miss your routine period. This happens because the body starts producing progesterone hormone after conceiving.

2. Morning Sickness

You will start to feel nausea and may vomit. This can happen as early as 3 weeks but typically starts around 6-8 weeks. The symptoms of morning symptoms typically subsides by 12-14 weeks of pregnancy.

3. Tender Breasts

Your breast will become swollen and tender as milk glands multiply.  You may start to notice your nipples are darker, and there are small bumps on the areola. There may be visible veins on your breasts.

4. Feeling Tired and Fatigue

You will start to feel more tired as your body works hard to develop your baby. Energy levels will start dropping and you will feel sleepy.

5. Frequent Bathroom Breaks

The increase of progesterone levels, improve the blood flow to the uterus and cause thickening of the uterine lining.

6. Food Cravings and Aversions

Many women may experience food cravings and aversions. The foods that you loved, may turn out to be repulsive, and what you didn’t like before, may become your favorite.

In my experience, I was shock I didn’t want Indian green chutney or Afghan Chutney when I use to love those with every single meal of mine. It was so hard to watch my husband eat all the chutneys i loved, while I preferred to eat something more plainer.

7. Heartburn

Unfortunately, due to hormonal and physical changes in your body during pregnancy causes symptoms like heartburn and acid reflex.

8. Constipation

The progesterone hormone has muscle relaxing properties that would slow down things too much. Therefore, the food will pass slowly through the intestine and lead to constipation

9. Dizziness

You may feel dizzy, which is another side effect of progesterone hormone. Progestorone relaxes your blood vessels and causes low blood pressure.

10. Sense of smell

You may have an heightened sense of smell and start to hate smell of certain food, drink, and fragrances.

11. Appetite will increase

You will start to feel hungry all the time.

12. Backache

Back pain may start due to progesterone hormone loosening the legaments covering pelvis.

13. Headaches

Suffering from headaches in early pregnancy is likely, your stress, hormones, and increased blood flow can be responsible for headaches in the first trimester.

While you may experience all or some of the early pregnancy signs or symptoms, every pregnancy is different. You may experience a symptom that is not on the list above! In my first pregnancy, with child #1, I had experienced morning sickness starting in my 7th week of pregnancy, I did not experience any vomiting and still had a fairly good appetite despite the nausea I had. I just forced myself to eat despite the nausea and did pretty well with that. My 2nd pregnancy is very different and I started experience even more symptoms, such as severe nausea which caused me to eat less, vomiting, increased sense of smell, heartburn, and headaches.

If you have be experiencing a combination of above signs, then it’s time to buy a pregnancy test and take the test! Though not all pregnancy tests are accurate, most can be accurate few days after your missed period.
